I went to visit my favorite museum in Kuwait - Bait Al Othman in Hawally when I saw the door next to the museum opened, I peeked in to see an amazing refurbished Kuwaiti house which is used by the Arab Media Forum. Of course I just had to ask the ladies to take a look around and they were nice enough to let me take some pictures.
I can only imagine what it was like to live in a house like that, ok minus the electricity, water, and ShowTime but I would love to have a house like that today unfortunately everyone is into the 'modern' boxy grey and black houses -yuck.
Wow. That's gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteHave you been to the Behbehani houses downtown near the Sheraton? I was extremely lucky to have been invited there by a friend-of-a-friend. She's American (lived in Kuwait I think most of her - if not her entire - life) and married to a very nice Kuwaiti man. they live in one of the old houses and it is full of their art (which in itself is an amazing collection). It is so pretty! People still live in the houses. If you want to get an idea of what one looks like, Shatiya Watiyah restaurant is in the same block and has the same architecture (and good Kuwaiti food!)
I know what you mean by the "box" houses. I think people are trying to cram as much building onto their square meters of land as they can without thinking of any type of creativity. I think (hope?) that this may be changing with the younger generations of Kuwaitis.
I love you posts. :)
Thanks girly:) I love the Behbehani complex, I wish they would re-do it and turn it into a 'hotel' type place. It is so beautiful! I want to live there and on the weekends live in the Bait Al Othman museum lol If only they would preserve what's left and let everyone enjoy them once again instead of leaving them to rot.
