All student fees and charges are paid one week prior to their first day of attendance. This means that parents pay in full the fees and charges upon completion of their registration. b) Deferred Payment Plan
Should a parent decide to participate in the Deferred Payment Plan, he/she pays 50% of his/her child’s tuition and fees upon completion of his/her child’s registration (inclusive of the Assessment Fee and Enrollment Deposit). The remaining 50% is paid in two installments.

  How much is 9-12 going to be? 10,000 KD? I don't think Harvard costs as much as this school does. I thought 2,600 KD a year for high school was a lot. After reading the teacher's profiles it looks as if it's a bunch of first-timers to the Middle East, the Kuwaiti kids are going to tear them up, they don't know what's coming.

Doha gas blast kills and injures dozens

 

A gas explosion at a restaurant in Qatar has killed 12 people, including two children, emergency services in the country said today.

The blast happened shortly after 10am this morning at a Turkish restaurant near Landmark Mall in the capital Doha, and left 30 more people suffering serious injuries.

Preliminary investigations suggest a faulty gas canister inside the restaurant may be to blame, with the explosion causing a fire that led to part of the building near a petrol station collapsing. link

Once again Qatar is in the news for expats being killed. I always have that fear of gas tanks exploding.

February 26 - A time to remember sacrifices made for your Freedom

This is the truth of why February 26 is celebrated in Kuwait, not for you to get an extra day of vacation but to remember those who died for your freedom. Over a thousand Kuwaiti citizens were killed and some have never been found so for one day remember someone other than yourselves. I will make sure my children know the past of Kuwait and teach them to take care of their country.

 

My heart goes out to  the families of the martyrs may they rest in peace. If you want to see more details of the war I would suggest visiting the Kuwait Memorial Museum.

Few of those who witnessed the horrendous scenes of destruction after the Iraqi occupation of Kuwait would have believed the country would look so good again in such a relatively brief period of time. Physically, Kuwait made a remarkable recovery. What was not immediately obvious was the degree of damage done to the psyche of many who experienced captivity or torture or witnessed the cruel acts of the occupying forces. Buildings and installations, it turned out, are much easier to repair than the mental health of human beings.

Recent studies have shown that more than two decades after the liberation some twenty five per cent of Kuwait's population still suffers from the debilitating condition known as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). According to psychiatrist Dr Abdullah Al Hammadi, PTSD is a long-term affliction from which the people of Kuwait will suffer for years to come, as do many American veterans of the Vietnam War, and even those of World War II.  Speaking to the Arab Times in his office at the Kuwait Center for Mental Health, Dr Al Hammadi said, "We are following the studies and literature from the United States and we see the same patterns, so we know that PTSD is not peculiar to Kuwait. The disease is the same, whether the patient is in America, Kuwait, or anywhere else in the world. The condition is definitely on the rise worldwide due to the large number of armed conflicts as well as natural disasters." (story link)

Taco Bell is readying for the launch of its national breakfast menu on March 27, with items such as the A.M. Crunchwrap designed to appeal to its fan base of younger men. And the chain says breakfast will be available until 11 a.m. — a half-hour later than McDonald’s offers its Egg McMuffins.

"We can turn the breakfast conversation into a two-horse race," Taco Bell President Brian Niccol said in an interview, noting that Taco Bell intends to be a "strong No. 2" after McDonald’s.

McDonald’s has long been the fast-food leader in the mornings, with its popular Sausage Biscuits, Hotcakes and other items pulling in roughly 20 percent of the company’s U.S. sales. But the chain has been facing stiffer competition over the years, with places such as Starbucks and Subway looking for a piece of the growing breakfast business.link

Celebrate Kuwait - February 25 & 26

With all the events and celebrations going on, does anyone actually know what the dates signify or why they celebrate? To most people living in Kuwait it's a week to travel and leave Kuwait, not stay and celebrate as the meaning behind the dates has been lost over time.

The significance of February 25:

According to the Al-Amiri Al-Diwan the holiday was in remembrance of Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah's ascension to the throne. Sheikh Abdullah was instrumental in Kuwait gaining independence from British control and the evolution of modern day Kuwait.

February 26: Kuwait invasion ended

 According to Wikipedia and those that survived the invasion:

On 2 August 1990, Iraqi forces invaded and annexed  Kuwait. After a series of failed diplomatic negotiations, the United States led a coalition to remove the Iraqi forces from Kuwait, in what became known as the Gulf War. On 26 February 1991, the coalition succeeded in driving out the Iraqi forces. As they retreated, Iraqi forces carried out a scorched earth policy by setting oil wells on fire. During the Iraqi occupation, about 1,000 Kuwaiti civilians were killed and more than 300,000 residents fled the country.

This was probably the last time Kuwaiti citizens were united as one.

Shakshooka Market and the Police

I finally got around to checking out Shakshooka Market at their Yarmouk location. The idea is great but this time it was in a parking lot with minimal lighting which made it hard to see the products. I did find a Mexican booth with home made tortillas and sangria. I bought one of the hand made Mexican dolls for my daughter, you can follow the owner @analandeta on Instagram.

One of the Ministry trucks showed up and people started packing up, at one point they thought it was ok to stay but then I saw one of the grey police vehicles roll thru with the lights on so I figured the police would soon show up so we left. When I got home I checked out my Instagram and saw they had moved to another location because of the cops.

Tourists in the Maldives upset Saudi prince booked out three entire islands which led to cancellations of their vacations. The Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia Salman bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud booked the islands for one month bringing with him a floating hospital, luxury yacht and one hundred body guards at a cost of $30 million.link

That's great considering there are Saudi villages that still have no electricity or running water.

Disneyland Paris, the theme park which is 10 percent-owned by Saudi Prince Alwaleed bin Talal Al Saud, has struck a deal with Qatar’s Regency Travel & Tours in order to increase the number of Gulf visitors to the French attraction, it was reported.

“There is a huge demand for Disneyland Paris from this part of the world,” Regency Travel & Tours CEO Tareq Abdullatif Taha was quoted as saying by Gulf Times.

The agreement was signed during a press conference in Doha between Regency and Disney Destinations International (DDI).

The Paris-based theme park, which is 38.9 percent owned by the Walt Disney Company, was rescued from bankruptcy in 1994 when Prince Alwaleed injected $350m into its parent company Euro Disney. link

Qatar is considering allowing women to enlist in its armed forces, commander of the country’s air force and head of national service has said, according to local media.

However, women would not be allowed to go into combat and would be restricted to security organisations and given social, cultural and medical roles, Major General Mubarak Mohammad Al Kumait Al Khayarin said at the launch of compulsory military service for men.

Qatar announced last year compulsory military service for male citizens aged 18 to 35. Graduates must serve three months and non-graduates four months.

Up to 2500 university and high school graduates will be included in the first intake, to begin training on April 1.

Training will include general military skills as well as lectures on religion, culture, civil defence, ambulance, the environment and preventive measures.

The UAE also recently announced compulsory military service for men and voluntary service for women aged 18 to 30.

Major General Al Khayarin said a decision on women serving would be made after a study.link

A US reality TV chef has revealed he was paid to fly to Bahrain to bake cakes for a party organised by a wealthy local resident and the experience has inspired him to expand his bakery business to the Middle East.

Buddy Valastro is the star of Cake Boss, a US reality television series which goes behind the scenes of the Italian-American family’s baking empire in New Jersey.

The show airs on The Discovery Channel’s Fatafeat network in the Middle East and it proved so popular with one Bahrain-based businessman was such a big fan that he contacted Valastro and hired him to fly to the Gulf state to bake cakes for an exclusive party.

“The reception has been tremendous all over the world... It’s been really well received in the Middle East, in Australia, South Africa – it’s in about 180 countries all over the world right now... I actually first came to Bahrain about two years ago to make a cake for somebody who saw the show,” Valastro said in an interview with The National newspaper while on a visit to Bahrain this month.link

If he decides to open I will finally be able to get one of his cakes!

Sales, corporate income tax nearer

 KUWAIT CITY, Feb 21: Minister of Finance Anas Al-Saleh has affirmed his ministry in fiscal 2013/2014 has undertaken two projects to apply the tax system in Kuwait — sales tax and corporate income tax, reports Al-Wasat daily. He indicated the total cost of the two projects is estimated at KD 35 million. He clarified the total cost of the first project — sales tax — is KD 15,680,000 whereas the total cost of the second project — corporate income tax — is estimated to be KD 19,250,000. link

Well, that's one way of getting people to move out of Kuwait.

Kuwait to entice 1 million tourists annually by 2015

Kuwait has set a target of welcoming one million tourists annually by 2015, as part of a five-year plan for its travel and tourism sector.

To cater to the influx of tourists, Kuwait Touristic Enterprises Company is launching a number of tourism, entertainment and sports projects valued at $460 million.

Kuwait’s Partnership Technical Bureau has also declared the development of resorts, recreational facilities, and a marina on Failaka Island as top priority, Hotelier Middle East reported.

The project will be complimented by new hotels focusing on the luxury sector, with 10,000 new rooms expected to come online by 2015 – which reflects an increase in supply by almost one third.

Among the new hotels scheduled to come online are four IHG properties, as well as the 307-room Millennium Hotel and Convention Centre in Kuwait City.

The government has also earmarked US $13 billion in funds for infrastructure, with the Kuwait Directorate General of Civil Aviation spearheading the upgrade of Kuwait International Airport, which will include the construction of a new passenger terminal to boost capacity from the current six million passengers to 13 million per year by 2016.link

Tourists dilemma: Dubai or Kuwait? I would hope that the Touristic Enterprise company will update their old website into something informative like Qatar's touristic website, as of now the website has little helpful information and some misspelling as well.

Olive Garden at Levels

My sister wanted me to finally try Olive Garden even though I really don't like pasta. We visited the new location at Levels in Mahboula. 

 The décor was alright but the seating kind of reminded me of Denny's instead of something more upscale.

 

 

The salad and bread sticks were awesome.

 My mother got the Mediterranean chicken dish and I ordered chicken parmesan which was delicious.

 The service was really bad, the staff were hard to find and you had to get up and find someone to bring napkins and refill the drinks. The cake I ordered was supposed to have mousse and chocolate ganache but after I ordered it the manager told us it was not imported but made locally. It was not that good and I wanted what was pictured. The tiramisu was also made locally and was so-so.

 My sister ordered the only item imported and it didn't turn out like it was supposed to, instead of puffy pastries she got flat doughy pieces of bread.

There is a Nestle, Café Bazza and Boccini also located in the complex.

Punish those who stage Strikes

Punish anyone who stages strike: MP ‘Bonus demand of oil sector workers not due’

KUWAIT CITY, Feb 8, (Agencies): MP Hamad Seif has said the demand of oil sector personnel for special bonus is not due. He called for the concerned authority to punish anyone who stages a strike in the vital sector, reports Al-Watan Arabic daily. He cited a huge difference between the salaries of oil sector employees and those of the employees in other sectors, stressing “there’s is need to ensure justice and equality in the salaries of personnel in all sectors”.

 

He pointed out that some political blocs have been encouraging the syndicates of oil sector to conduct the strike to gain more privileges, but the trend is unacceptable because it forms a huge gap between the salaries of oil sector employees and other sectors. “Although it is important to support the oil sector and grant its employees incentives, as oil industry is the key source of the nation’s income, reasonable actions should be taken without straining the State’s budget”, he noted.

 

With reference to the proposed increment to children and rent allowances, MP Seif said it’s important for the parliament and the government to find a unanimous solution to the two files in the current period. He also said the need for the parliament to take a new approach in handling citizen-related issues far away from stubbornness and confrontation, because the trend has become useless in recent times as it leads to escalation between the two authorities and provokes chaos in the country.

 

It's nice to know the employees would consider striking when majority of them get paid to do nothing. Some "senior" staff employees don't even know how to print out their emails and they are originally Western women who married a Kuwaiti yet they have no idea of how to work their outlook and get paid 3500 KD or more to do it.

 

Some citizen admin staff can't work a copy machine and has no knowledge of how to open up a filing cabinet so they use the FN staff to do it for them, that is of course when they show up for work. There was a female who was present at work 86 days out of a year. People can't even get into the oil companies unless they have wasta as they know it's the best paying company for the least amount of work and they don't get penalized.

 

Bogus courses, trips to Dubai for training they know they will never use here and all of the other perks for doing nothing. They rely on the contractor expat staff to do the work and they collect the rewards and they threaten to strike, well that doesn't mean too much, the company already works on minimal staff. Just sayin'

Seatbelt crack down?

Campaign against no seat belts, mobile phones soon

KUWAIT CITY, Feb 5: Assistant Undersecretary for Traffic Affairs at the Ministry of Interior Major General Abdul Fattah Al-Ali declared that intense traffic campaigns starting Feb 15 will be launched in all six governorates against those who do not wear seatbelts inside vehicles and those who use mobile phones while driving, reports Al-Rai daily.

In a press release issued by the Ministry of Interior, Major General Al-Ali stressed that such distractions is the main reason behind many traffic accidents in the country that lead to the loss of innocent lives.

He explained that the traffic campaigns are aimed to ensure the road users as well as pedestrians follow traffic rules and regulations.link

MOI targets seatbelt, mobile use

KUWAIT: The Ministry of Interior will launch a campaign from Feb 15,2014 targeting motorists with unfastened seatbelts and those using mobile phones while driving, According to the ministry's website, passengers in the front seats of a vehicle must have their seatbelts buckled at all times. All those who violate the safety seatbelt rules have to pay the fine.

Drivers are responsible for their passengers safety for ages up to 15 - ages 16 and older are responsible for themselves. Abiding by safety seatbelt rules is for each individual, including visitors as well as citizens and residents. Children under the age of 10 must be seated in the backseat of the vehicle and equipped with a special safety seatbelt or HELD BY A RESPONSIBLE PERSON.

Ok, now everyone has to wear seatbelts yet I don't see anything about children being in car seats only "special seatbelts" and WTH does "held by a responsible person" mean exactly? Who do they consider responsible and can that "responsible" person hold onto a child when the car slams on the brakes and the child becomes a projectile? If the child is older than 16 will they get the ticket?

I think the main focus should be on drivers who talk on their phones which is like 1 in 2 people, most of the time they have trouble driving without distractions now they add a phone to the equation which equals distracted drivers. This new campaign is not CLEAR!

2015 Chevy Tahoe

The General Motors Assembly Plant in Arlington has begun shipping 2015-model full-size SUVs to dealers.
The plant, which has been building “pilot” versions of the SUVs – essentially practice vehicles – for several months, shipped its first sellable trucks to dealers on Wednesday, plant spokeswoman Donna McLallen said.
She could not say how many vehicles were shipped or whether the plant is working at full speed.
The 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe, Chevy Suburban, GMC Yukon and Cadillac Escalade are the first all-new full-size SUVs from GM in nearly eight years.
Although sales of full-size SUVs have dropped about 40 percent in the last five years, GM’s trucks still dominate the segment.
The company sold 183,616 full-size SUVs last year, according to Automotive News – all of them built at the GM Arlington plant.
GM spent $331 million to retool the factory for the 2015 SUVs and added a $200 million stamping plant to produce body panels.
In addition, the plant got a third shift, giving it production capacity of more than 250,000 vehicles.
Most of the 2015 SUVs will be equipped with 5.3-liter V-8s that have direct fuel injection, cylinder deactivation and generate 355 horsepower and 383 lb.-ft. of torque.
Although they still ride on the same platforms that supported last year’s SUVs, the trucks offer crisper, more chiseled styling.
The Tahoe – GM’s top-selling full-size SUV – will start at $45,595 for a base two-wheel-drive model, about $1,000 more than last year’s SUV, according to Automotive News..link

In another article it says the Tahoe is about the same size as the Traverse, what have they done to the Tahoe? It will be a smaller body and will cost even more to own as well. I think it looks like a bigger version of the Ford Flex wagon now that the body is squared off.

Kuwaiti Police Women - No make-up or nail Polish

Women in Kuwait could now think twice before joining the police after a new decision banning them of wearing make-up or adding nail polish during duty.

The decision by the ministry of interior also warned the female cops against dying their hair and stressed that they must always appear in good shape and clean uniform.

Newspapers said the ministry issued the new decision after it noticed many police women come to duty with polished nails and wearing much make-up.

“The decision warned all police women against adding make-up or nail polish and against having a dyed hair while on duty,” Al Anba daily said.

This is funniest thing I've seen about Kuwait, a show about obese kids sent to other places and these British citizens were sent to Kuwait, first racist comment 7:03 and the commentator talks about the expats going to the "exclusive area of Mubarak Al Kabeer," yeah ok. She goes on to describe "the Brits are staying in a traditional mansion," Really? Servants? It's shows like this that give people a certain image of Kuwait.

Alcohol missing in Kuwait?

Kuwait Times: While investigations are making progress in a case involving the disappearance of thousands of liquor bottles prepared to be destroyed, a report yesterday suggested that officers involved might be working on finding a "a way out" of the problem. Al-Rai daily had reported on Thursday that ministry staff discovered while supervising the process of destroying 60,000 liquor bottles seized in operations since 2010 that at least 10,000 bottles were missing and later raised the number to 17,000. The bottles were stored in one of five containers that was found to be empty according to sources quoted in the report.

Yesterday, the same daily quoted "high ranking security sources" who indicated that senior officials questioned over the missing bottles are trying to fabricate a story based on the assumption that the bottles were damaged during storage rather than being stolen. "Around 35,000 corks were collected during a wide operation at the bottle destruction site," said the sources who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

They explained that the stoppers were taken back to the ministry's warehouses "to be used as a basis for a formal response to the public prosecution's skepticisms by claiming that the missing bottles were damaged due to improper storage." The sources claimed that the same ply was successfully used to cover up a previous case involving the disappearance of nearly 950 bottles.

News about the case prompted Deputy Prime Minister and Minister Sheikh Mohammad Al-Khalid Al-Sabah to launch an immediate probe amid suspicions that police officers might have stolen, facilitated the theft of or failed to properly guard the missing bottles.

Seriously? First of all storing 60,000 bottles of liquor in a container is like teasing children with candy. They really thought that 4 years later all of the bottles would be there and when they opened the container GASP! it was empty? Where do you think the alcohol comes from? Who is at all of the parties drinking it up and making sure their friends don't get busted? Have they checked on the bottles confiscated from people flying into Kuwait? How many of those bottles are unaccounted for?

"Light" - New restaurant block coming to Abu Halaifa

The Fintas/Abu Halaifa area is growing at the speed of lightning. This is one of the many restaurant blocks popping up in the area. The new "Light" complex is coming along quickly and will be open very soon. The good things is no one has to travel to Avenues to eat, bad news the traffic will increase and all of the rich fufu youngsters like to hide out in this area with their bf/gf because they know their family won't dare enter the area.

 

I hope some speeder doesn't lose control and drive straight into it.
